Marshes, wetlands, and waterways offer endless inspiration–but their complexity can make them challenging to paint. In this three-day workshop, students will learn to simplify these intricate landscapes by focusing on the larger shapes, values, and color relationships that create a strong sense of structure. 

The guiding principle will be "paint masses, not grasses." Rather than describing every blade of grass or ripple in the water, students will learn to suggest detail through thoughtful shapes, edges, and brushwork. Special attention will also be given to painting water, including reflections, glare, and  atmospheric light.

The first day will be spent in the field creating studies and strong painting starts. On day two and three, students will work in the studio to further develop a plein air painting or create a new work based on their field studies.

Suitable for beginning through advanced artists, the workshop will include demonstrations, lectures, and individualized instruction. Oils, water-soluble oils, and open acrylics are recommended; standard acrylics may also be used.

Artist/Instructor Robert J. Simone says "the most closely held secret in painting is that there are no secrets!" Simone says that great painting flows from mastering the basics. He has been described as very passionate, extremely knowledgeable, patient and kind. He can meet you where you are and give you the information most critical to your growth. His teaching style is a stream of consciousness approach that draws on his vast studies and experience. Although highly focused, his is very lighthearted and fun loving. His workshops are joyful, deep dives into the depths of painting.
