NANCY TANKERSLEY
Still Life for the Plein Air Painters
Feb. 9, 10, 11th
$550

HOW IS A VASE LIKE A FARM SILO? Designed for the plein air painter who doesn’t want to paint outside, this class will help students see that they don’t need to wait for pleasant days to practice their outdoor painting skills. Students will set up and paint still life in a way that can replicate conditions that one might see outdoors. Through daily demos, lecture and painting exercises, the instructor will show how the principles that apply to painting the landscape can help make one a better painter of any subject. Through careful analysis of each situation, you will learn to start slow but finish fast. Students will paint a different set up each day.

Studio & Plein Air
Feb. 16 - 18, 2023

$550
Capturing the Moment with Color, Light and Emotion!
Landscape element & possibly Still Life
Studio & 1-day Plein Air, weather permitting
Beginners to Advanced
Oil is preferred medium but acrylic, watercolor or pastel

This workshop is designed for students wishing to move their work in that direction. You will practice loosening your style and capturing light, color and that emotional moment. Emphasis will be placed on concept, design/composition, value, color, brushwork and edges to create harmonious paintings. Large abstract mass simplification and value to begin a painting will be stressed. Seeing color and the temperature of light, as it affects the scene and then mixing the right color and value to convey that. Paint application and brushwork will follow. Finally, we will cover pulling all these elements together to make an emotional statement about your subject. We as artists are creating a work of art rather than just rending what is in front of us. Seeing like an artist is what it is all about!

CHRIS GROVES

"Pictorial Space"

STUDIO -  Workshop & Show

March 2, 3, 4th

$595.

All subjects are welcome as we will explore the two (2) main types of pictorial space within the genres of realism and abstraction. Starting by placing lines, shapes and color on the flat, two-dimensional space of the canvas, then manipulating the interaction and tension of those artistic elements, the artist will be able to understand, visualize, and create pictorial space in their paintings. Secondly, we will explore, develop and enhance our paintings with the influences of the overall illusion of three-dimensional space which is also suggested by those shapes, colors and lines.

Students will bring any reference material of subject matter they may want to paint. Demos will be focused on the shapes, lines and color of landscape and still life subject.

Biography ~ CATHERINE HILLIS

She acted and modeled in print and television ads as a youngster, later majoring in Theatre at the University of Georgia.

After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts, cum laude, from the University of Georgia, Hillis continued her Master of Fine Art studies at the University of Texas.  Her journalist husband’s career took her to different cities, finally settling in the Virginia and Washington D.C. area, where she established her reputation as a fine art water color artist and a popular instructor.

Hillis works both in the studio and outdoors. During the past few years, the artist has traveled extensively to plein air competitions, fulfilling her love for painting nature and history. Hillis believes that observation is her best teacher and she is known for the effect of light and movement in her work.

She’s earned eight Signature Memberships from national watercolor organizations and was one of 40 elected members of the prestigious Washington Society of Landscape Painters. The artist regularly competes in international watercolor exhibitions as well as plein air competitions and invitational shows. Her painting, “Gift From the Sea,” was recently included in an international watercolor exhibition in the Quingdao Laotian Museum of Art, China and she served as artist in residence in Dinan, France (2007) and at Hot Springs National Park (2010).

Catherine Hillis was a respected instructor teaching classes at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, VA and at Frederick Community College as well as workshops nationally and abroad. Her watercolor paintings are included in museum, corporate and personal collections and have been published in many venues, including Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine, Watercolor Artist Magazine, Plein Air Magazine, American Artist Magazine, The Washington Post, the Best of America Watercolor Artists & Artisans, Volume 1 and the Best of Virginia Artists & Artisans 2005

LARRY MOORE

"Abstracted Landscape"

October 12, 13, 14, 15th (4-days)

$650

Larry Moore is a quick-witted conversationalist who tells great stories while being a humble, perceptive, and perpetual student of art.

Whether painting around other artists in the warehouse of studios near his Florida home or taking in six New York museums in two days, Larry is open to receive any information that might make the next painting better.  Great proficiency usually comes from a willingness to learn, but rare is the painter who achieves that proficiency and yet maintains the thirst of the beginner.  It has been said that even minor success can be the undoing of an artist – he can become complacent when his bills are regularly being paid on time.  Larry’s many successes and awards, from both his illustration and fine art careers, have not deterred him from pursuing the better painting, everyday.

As a teacher, Larry talks about “thinking with paint” and “finding your voice in paint”.  Over the 35 plus years Larry has been painting, he has continually added to his skills in technique, vision, understanding, and communication.  His paintings become even fuller, richer with every addition.  Larry has been teaching in a workshop format for over 18 years which has given him the opportunity to pass along his ever-growing painting/art knowledge – especially the part about passion and hard work.

“The voice of the artist comes from these things: color, shape, edge, brush work, composition and concept. It’s the individual voice of the artist that separates him/her from the rest.”
