Working from photos, it's easy to let the image make all your decisions for you. This workshop teaches you to use photographic reference as a starting point, not a final answer–incorporating an accurate figure (human or animal) into a background that supports it without overwhelming it.

You'll learn to depart from the photo and make deliberate creative choices, so your paintings express your own eye rather than the camera's. Working in both acrylic and oil, you'll explore approaches that move beyond a strictly academic method, with the emphasis shifting from figure accuracy (still important) toward design and creative possibility.

Perfect for artists who love painting living creatures but get stuck chasing detail instead of making art.

Nancy Tankersley, leader of the modern plein air movement, will be your instructor for this workshop that promises to be fun and exciting. Nancy is one of the founders of the Plein Air Easton started in 2005 and will serve as the Awards Judge for the 20th Anniversary. She was recently recognized as a Living Master by Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine (October 2023). We are honored to have Nancy as your instructor.
