tONALISM:
From classical to contemporary
Oct 15, 2026 - Oct 17, 2026
daily
9 - 4:00pm
Location: Studio
Tuition: $695
(full payment required to register)
This class will merge both classical and contemporary methods, combining theory and practical application to explore painting in the tonalist style. The workshop will begin with a lecture on color theory to help students select an intentional palette. From there, we will move into discussions of edges, process, design, and composition–focusing on how these elements work together to create specific emotion and mood in our paintings. Participants will also learn how to convert incorrect colors from photographic references into a cohesive tonal palette. Mark-making techniques and the history of the Tonalism movement will be heavily explored and demonstrated, helping each student discover a personal process and approach to painting in this style. Over the course of the three days, Chris will demonstrate the development of a small, medium, and larger size tonalist painting.
Please bring your own printed or digital reference images to paint from during the workshop.
